Te Aroha College and Community is invested in developing a ‘Culturally Intelligent community’, through opening it’s doors to international students from throughout the world who come to Te Aroha to have a true ‘New Zealand’ cultural experience. Te Aroha College believes that in doing so, it provides the opportunity for all students to develop global connections and widen their horizons to other global perspectives and different ways of thinking.
‘The students of Te Aroha College are our future, they will be confident, connected, well rounded and have a clear future direction. They will have pride, purpose and flexibility. They will seek excellence and excel locally, nationally and internationally in their chosen strengths. They will be culturally aware and demonstrate tolerance, respect and understanding and will go out into the world and sustainably take responsibility for themselves and those that rely on them.’
Prospectus, Te Aroha College, 2018
Te Aroha College believes that this opportunity is so much more than merely a revenue earner, and is committed to develop the notion of creating ‘culturally intelligent’ students, who will have the ability to recognise and respect people's diversity and individual differences, who are comfortable working with people from other cultures and have a broad background and knowledge of world affairs and cultures through this experience.
Te Aroha has begun the journey of ‘Cultural Intelligence’ with their staff, students and host community, capitalizing on the drive within, and assisting staff and students to develop their knowledge of cultural practices, dimensions and systems to plan for and adapt their programmes, actions and behaviours to provide not only for their International students, but to cater for the multi-cultural nature of every classroom within the school.
Students are being encouraged to become cultural ambassadors, to challenge their own way of thinking, and open their minds to how others view the world. Students believe that it is through education and learning about other cultures, they will overcome fears and predjudices that stem from a lack of knowledge and encourage a more inclusive, welcoming environment for international students and others who move into the area from elsewhere.
We at Cultural TransitioNZ are proud to be involved in this process, challenging existing ideas, creating professional development opportunities to create more meaningful cross-cultural connections and seeking to break down barriers and create a more culturally intelligent future generation.
